The Halliday Centre is hosting an International Conference on "Translation, Language Contact, and Multilingual Communication" (HCLS-C2) - the second of a series of annual conferences - to be held from 13 to 15 August 2008. The conference will be preceded by a Pre-Conference Institute on 11 and 12 August 2008.  

First Call For Papers

We are pleased to announce the First Call for Papers for the Fourth International Conference on Multimodality (4-ICOM) taking place in Singapore on 30 July - 1 Aug 2008. The conference theme is ‘From Print to Interactive Digital Media: Technology, Multimodal Representation and Knowledge’.

4-ICOM brings together leading international scholars from a range of disciplines (i.e. linguistics, social semiotics, communications & new media, digital media art, history, mathematics, science, computer science and education) to explore the ways in which technology enables and constrains the ways knowledge, social relations and culture are constructed and enacted, with a special focus on interactive digital media. The aim is to explore the functions of language, visual imagery, three dimensional objects, space, sound, music and so forth, and to develop new approaches to understanding how these resources integrate in the world of new interactive digital media.

Questions which arise include the following. What is the relationship between technology, multimodal representation and knowledge? How is interactive digital media changing our view of the world and each other? What are the implications for teaching and research in the humanities and social sciences? What directions have research & development in digital technology taken, and for what reasons?

We encourage papers which address the conference themes from different theoretical perspectives. Papers which address more general issues in semiotics, multimodality and multimodal analysis are also welcome.

4-ICOM is run in conjunction with the International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA2008). 4-ICOM participants will have access to ISEA2008 exhibitions and galleries at no charge from 25 July to 3 August 2008. Information on the exhibitions, galleries and combined events will be provided soon.

Papers should fit into 40 minute timeslot, with 30 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions and discussion.

 

 

Abstracts

Abstracts (approx 200 words) should contain a title and information about the speaker (i.e. name, university affiliation and email address). Equipment requirements beyond those needed for a powerpoint presentation should be specified.

Registration fees include pre-conference reception, daily buffet lunch, daily coffee and tea breaks, conference kitbag and program booklet, admission to plenary and paper sessions at 4-ICOM, and admission to ISEA2008 digital media exhibitions and galleries from 25 July to 3 August 2008 (details to be provided).

 

Payment Procedure

Payment modes available are: Credit Card or Cheque/Bankdraft


For online payment by credit card (Visa or Mastercard):

  1. Complete the online registration and select the payment mode as Visa or MasterCard.

  2. You will be re-directed to a secured payment portal by WorldPay to perform your online payment.

  3. Once your transaction is processed, you will receive a confirmation email from WorldPay, followed by the registration confirmation email from the conference manager within the next working day.

  4. The merchant name reflected on your credit card bill will be Integrated Meetings Specialist (Holdings) Pte Ltd.

For cheques / bankdraft payment:

  1. Complete the online registration and select the payment mode as Cheque or Bankdraft.

  2. Bank account name to issue the cheque/bankdraft: Integrated Meetings Specialist (Holdings) Pte Ltd.

  3. Print a copy of the invoice from the online registration system, and mail it, together with the cheque/bankdraft to the address as indicated on the invoice.

  4. Please remember to indicate your login ID, name, telephone or email and the conference name at the back of the cheque/bank draft.

  5. Upon receipt of your cheque/bankdraft, you will receive a notification by email

  6. When your cheque/bankdraft is cleared by the bank, you will receive the registration confirmation by email.

Cancellation Policy

  1. A 50% refund will only be made for cancellations made in writing and received by the secretariat on or before 1 June 2008.

  2. There will be no refund for cancellations made after 1 June 2008.

  3. Refunds (if any) will be made after the conference.
